Online poker strategy articles will emphasize time and time again the importance of a airtight strategy, and while strategy is certainly at the center of winning there are many other things can contribute to your overall success. There are some things that even hours at the virtual felt won't teach you, but if you want to be competitive in today's world of online poker then they're things you nevertheless need to know.

Know the Value of Free Poker
Most online players' ultimate goal is to not only be competitive but to win consistently at cash poker. Once you've had a taste of the cash action, it's hard to feel content at the points-only tables and tournaments. That said, there's a lot to be gained by putting in your hours in the free area. We're not suggesting that you forgo cash poker, just that you work out the bugs in a less painful place.

Admittedly the free area won't fully prepare you for the higher skill level present at the cash tables, nor will it prepare you for the sense of defeat that comes after a big cash loss. That said, you're less apt to be seen as a calling station or an easy target if you learn the ropes in the free area first and come to the cash tables looking and acting at least fairly competent. The free areas of poker rooms are also a great place to test out new concepts and equations and to fine tune your strategy for a new game.

Know More Poker
It goes without saying that in poker knowledge is power, but we're not talking strictly about mastering one game; we're talking about expanding your skills to include several – or at least two or three – variations. There's no denying that Texas Hold'em has the most action, but that means that the skill level and turnout at less popular tables and tournaments is generally lower, giving you more opportunities to profit.

If you've been doing your homework then you've no doubt already seen that Omaha is actually home to a lot of the more notable high stakes action. Likewise being good not only at Hold'em and Omaha but also at Stud will make you a formidable force at the high paying but poorly attended mixed game tournaments and events.

Know The Technology
If you've been playing poker for a while, but some players still inexplicably seem to have an edge on you, then it could be technology – not skill – that's giving them an advantage. These days it's rare for serious online players to compete with only the tools offered by their resident poker room. At the very least, most players now purchase and/or download programs that compute their pot and implied odds automatically for every hand. Really serious players take it one step farther by using programs like Shark Scope which also track their opponents and help them to recognize patterns in their play.

If you're a traditionalist and refuse to go with the flow by using poker software, then you might consider evening your playing field by trying some of the new anonymous tables which are designed to defy the shark scope technology mentioned above.
