Online Poker Tips

Some online poker players are strictly ring game players while others have a clear preference for tournaments and still others dabble in both fields. While it's easy enough to find ring game action 24/7, it doesn't take long for online players to realize that not all poker tournaments are created equal. Most of the larger poker rooms host hundreds or even thousands of tournaments a day, making it hard to determine which one's worth your time, or – if you're on a budget – which one is the best value. Below is a quick guide to finding your perfect tournament.

Lobby Filters
Joining a poker room is only the first step toward finding a tournament. Once the lobby loads you'll see what I mean. Because the larger poker rooms have dozens of tournaments running simultaneously, your list of possibilities may seem intimidatingly large. Many players buy into the next tournament that's in their stakes range, and while this is an ok strategy if you're short on time, you're probably missing out on something better. Lobby filters are a great way to narrow your tournament search. You can reduce the list of available events by date, time, game, buy-in, format (MTT, SNG, freeroll, bounty, satellite, etc) and sometimes even field size.

How to Get Seated ASAP
Saving your filter preferences is one way to optimize your tournament search the next time you play, but some poker rooms will do you one better by offering a quick seat feature that will instantly buy you into the next available tournament that fits those parameters.

How to Find and Enter Big Money Events
If you're flexible about where you play, then your tournament options are virtually unlimited. You don't have to join a poker room to see its tournament schedule either, just check the tournament or promotions sections of their website. This is a good way to get familiar with who offers the best weekly and weekend guarantees, but be advised that the best events tend to fill up early.

Where the Satellites Are
All of the larger poker rooms host their own online series, and many also sponsor their own live events, giving you year-round opportunities for a big win or to grind nothing into something by freerolling to the top of major satellites or site-specific promotions. If your ultimate goal is to transition to live tournament competition by winning a seat to a big event online, then there are two ways of going about it. Either you can check your favorite poker rooms' promo schedules and pick the satellite events that best suit you and your budget, or you can identify the events you really want to play at first and then do a search to determine which rooms offer satellites for their seats.
