Online Poker Betting for Beginners
While the cards are almost always going to determine the action at a poker table, many beginners underestimate the power of the chips. If poker was a book, the bets would tell the story, and the cards would just be the pictures. Many hands are won not because a player has the best cards but because they know how to bet to protect what they do have. Assuming you already know what makes a good hand, you now need to learn how to bet to protect or even optimize on the cards you've been dealt. In this article, we'll explore the basics of poker betting and how it applies to your strategy.
Enforced bets
There are two kinds of enforced bets: antes and blinds. These bets are in place to ensure that every hand offers the winner a pot. Blinds are used throughout community card games like Texas Hold'em and Omaha whereas antes are more common in games without blinds or in the later rounds of tournaments.
An ante is a small bet that every player must make at the beginning of a hand. No player is exempt from an ante. Blinds on the other hand are two bets that rotate around the table with every hand. The small blind is half of the big blind, and the big blind is the minimum bet at the start of a hand. Every player must at least call the big blind to see the next round of cards; if the small blind wants to proceed then they must pay the difference. In tournaments, both the antes and the blinds will get bigger as the game progresses.
Betting Restrictions
There are three different sets of betting rules that may be applied to any poker game: no limit, fixed limit and pot limit. The rules for each are as simple as their names. That is, no limit poker games place no limit on how much you can bet. Fixed limit poker games are the opposite; there is a ceiling to every bet and to every betting round. Pot limit games fall in the middle, allowing players to wager only enough to double what's already in the pot.
Betting Position
In online poker, the dealing is done automatically, making the dealer position purely symbolic. This position is represented by a button that rotates around the table. The player directly to the left of the dealer will bet first while the player in the dealer position bets last. Being in the dealer position gives you an obvious advantage because it allows you to assess the strength of your opponents' starting hands, giving you the best opportunity to bluff and/or steal the blinds.
Sizing Your Bets
While playing at a fixed limit, pot limit or no limit table will tell you what you can bet, only you can decide what you should bet. This is the part of betting that intimidates many beginners. It seems all too easy to let your opponents make the decision for you and then to call, but if you get pinned as a calling station then no one at the table will respect your bets, and you'll find yourself a frequent target. To determine when and how much you should bet, we recommend learning concepts like pot odds which will help you to identify the smartest risks.
