Playing poker online has become increasingly easy as poker rooms enlist more and more player features and automated options. A surprising number of beginners find themselves feeling more lost when reading advice on poker sites or forums or trying to follow table-side chatter. Over the years, the poker playing community has become so enthusiastic about the game that they've pretty much invented their own language. If you're planning to play online poker and want to sound like you know what you're doing, then here are some terms worth learning.

Aggressive – a playing style characterized by aggressive betting in the form of intimidating wagers and frequent re-raises

Ammunition – your chips

Bad beat – when a player whose hand has extremely good odds of winning gets beaten

Bankroll – the total amount of money available to a player

Blinds – two forced bets that rotate around the table clockwise, ensuring that there is a pot for every hand

Bot – a computer player

Bounty – a tournament where part of the entries are paid out for eliminating opponents

Button – the symbolic dealer button which rotates around the table to determine playing position

Buy-in – the fee required to enter a tournament

Calling station – a passive player that always calls but never initiates a bet or raises

Collusion – a form of cheating that involves multiple players at the same table

Donkey – a dumb player

Draw – a type of poker where players can have part of their initial hand replaced; also the act of revealing the table cards in a community card game

Fish – a beginner; an easy target

Flop – in Texas Hold'em and Omaha, the first round of cards dealt to the board

Kicker – a high card like an Ace or King

Limp – to eke into a hand on nothing more than the minimum bet

Loose – a playing style wherein a player sees as many hands as possible

Maniac – a player that is both loose and aggressive

MTT – a multi-table tournament

No Limit – a poker game that has no betting restrictions

Outs – the number of cards left in the deck that can help your hand

Passive – a playing style characterized by minimal bets

Pot limit – a poker game where players may only bet as much as is currently in the pot

Pot odds – an equation that allows players to assess risk vs gain

Rabbit – a camera or in-play feature that allows observers to see the players' cards or allows players to see the next card in the draw after a hand has been folded

Rebuy – the amount necessary to buy back into a tournament after your initial stack has been lost

River – the fifth and final deal to the center of the table in Texas Hold'em and Omaha

River rat – a player that limps to the showdown in hopes of drawing something on an otherwise weak hand

Shark – a good player or pro

SNG – sit and go; a fast single table tournament

Stack – your total number of chips on the table

Street – a dealing round in community card games

Tight – a playing style characterized by calculated risks

Tilt – when a player becomes so tired or frustrated that they are unable to think or play logically

Turn – the fourth deal to the center of the table in Texas Hold'em or Omaha
