Other Poker Games

Every poker game you play likely started as a late-night amusement among card-playing buddies. The first poker variants date back over a hundred years, but even today players continue to tweak and twist the games as they see fit. Frankly, even most seasoned poker players would be surprised to know how many variants of their favorite game are actually out there. Some variants are more popular than others, so for the sake of brevity this page will cover only those variants that you'll see at an online poker room.

Every poker variant falls into one of three basic categories: draw, stud and community card (also called “flop”). Their simplicity is also in that order. Oddly enough, the more complex community card games have quickly become the most popular modern variations. Texas Hold'em, Omaha and Omaha Hi/Lo have all become common knowledge among regular poker players, but a newer variant called Pineapple is quickly gaining credibility. What ties these games together is the fact that each uses a combination of private and shared cards.

While draw games seem to be the least popular live poker variants, you might be surprised by how familiar this style of poker actually is. That's because Five Card Draw is the game that introduced many old school players to poker. It's also the format that's favored by almost all video poker machines. As you might have guessed from the name of the game, the defining feature in draw-style poker is a player's ability to discard part of their hand and have it replaced in a draw. In addition to the classic game of Five Card Draw, other draw variants like Badugi and 2-7 Draw have also attracted a loyal following.

Prior to the development of community card games, stud was the poker style of choice. For that reason, stud has the largest number of recognizable variants including: Five Card Stud, Six Card Stud, Seven Card Stud, Razz and a number of other hi/lo modifications. You'll recognize a stud game by its use of a combination of face up and face down cards. Unlike community card games, in stud each set of cards is dealt strictly to one player. Stud also has the largest variety of betting formats with no limit, pot limit, spread limit and fixed limit tables.

The old poker pros believed that the best players could dominate at any game, and that's why the original World Series of Poker championship was more of a gauntlet – comprised of several different variants – than a single simple showdown. If you're of the same mind, or you simply like variety, then mixed games make for a nice alternative. Mixed games – like SHOE and HORSE – incorporate several variants from different categories. In 2010, the WSOP honored the pros that started it all by replacing their popular HORSE Championship with the new Poker Player's Championship which incorporates eight games borrowed from all three poker groups.
